In the field of linguistics, DCT is among the most effective tools used to study the behavior of communication learners. It can be used to study various issues, including the manner of speaking, turn taking and lexical selection. It can be used to determine the level of phonological sophistication in learners speaking. Recent research utilized a DCT as tool to evaluate the ability to resist of EFL students. Participants were presented with an array of scenarios and asked to select an appropriate response from the choices provided. The authors found the DCT to be more efficient than other methods of refusal like a questionnaire or video recordings. However, the researchers warned that the DCT should be used with caution and should include other types of methods for collecting data. DCTs are typically designed with specific linguistic criteria in mind, such as content and form. These criteria are based on intuition and based on the assumptions of test developers. They aren't always exact and could be misleading in describing how ELF learners actually reject requests in real-world interactions. This issue requires further studies of alternative methods of assessing refusal competence. In a recent study, DCT responses to student requests via email were compared with the responses of an oral DCT. The results showed that DCTs preferred more direct and traditionally indirect request forms and used hints less than email data. Metapragmatic Questionnaires (MQs) This study examined Chinese learners' pragmatic choices when it comes to using Korean through a variety of tools that were tested, including Discourse Completion Tasks (DCTs) Metapragmatic Questionnaires, Refusal Interviews (RIs). Participants were 46 CLKs at the upper intermediate level who answered MQs, DCTs, and RIs. They were also asked to reflect on their evaluation and refusal performance in RIs. The results indicated that the CLKs were more likely to reject native Korean pragmatic norms, and their decisions were influenced by four major factors that included their personalities, multilingual identities, their ongoing lives, and their relational advantages. These findings have implications for pedagogy for L2 Korean assessment and teaching. The MQ data was analyzed first to determine the participants' actual choices. The data were classified according to Ishihara's (2010) definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, we compared their choices with their linguistic performance on DCTs in order to determine if they were indicative of pragmatic resistance. Interviewees also had to explain the reasons for choosing an atypical behavior in certain situations. The results of the MQs, DCTs and z-tests were examined using descriptive statistics and Z tests. It was discovered that the CLKs often resorted to euphemistic responses such as “sorry” and “thank you.” This was likely due to their lack of familiarity with the target language which led to a lack of knowledge of korea pragmatic norms. The results showed that CLKs' preferences to diverge from L1 and 2 norms or to move towards L1 norms varied based on the DCT situations. For example, in Situation 3 and 12, the CLKs preferred to diverge from both L1 and pragmatic norms while in Situation 14, they favored converging to L1 norms. The RIs further revealed that the CLKs were aware their pragmatism in every DCT situation. RIs were conducted on a one-to-one basis within a period of two days of the participants completing the MQs. The RIs were transcribed and recorded by two coders independent of each other and then coded. The coding process was an iterative process, where the coders discussed and read each transcript. The coding results are then compared with the original RI transcripts to determine if they accurately portrayed the underlying behavior. Refusal Interviews (RIs) The key issue in research on pragmatics is: Why do some learners decide to not accept native-speaker norms? Recent research attempted to answer this question by using various experiments, including DCTs MQs and RIs. The participants were comprised of 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs, and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. They were asked to perform the DCTs in their first language and to complete the MQs in either their L1 or L2. Then they were invited to a RI where they were asked to consider their responses to the DCT situations. The results showed that CLKs, on average, did not conform to the pragmatic norms of native speakers in more than 40 percent of their responses. They did this despite the fact that they were able to create patterns that were similar to native speakers. In addition, they were conscious of their own pragmatism. They attributed their choices to learner-internal aspects such as their personalities and identities that are multilingual, as well as ongoing life experiences. They also referred to external factors like relational benefits. They outlined, for instance how their relationships with their professors allowed them to perform more comfortably in terms of the linguistic and social expectations of their university. The interviewees expressed concern about the social pressures or consequences they could be subject to when their social norms were not followed. They were concerned that their native friends would perceive them as “foreigners” and think they are not intelligent. This concern was similar in nature to the concerns expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009). These findings suggest that native speakers pragmatic norms aren't the preferred norm for Korean learners.
